Syllabus
Week 1 – Course Overview & Introduction to Drawing
This is an example Syllabus and will vary from course to course

An introduction to drawing by breaking it down into five basic areas, line, edges, spaces, relationships tone and then to colour.
We begin with observing an eye. Drawing aids and tools are introduced.
Following closely lessons from the great master - Betty Edwards, the student begins with graphite and paper.
Week 2 – The Third Dimension

How to make your value look “real”
From line and contour, we learn relationships and spaces. As a subject, we explore the face and portraiture. Building on the shortcuts and tools we learned in Week One, this project is designed to build confidence and discipline; the artist will begin to see light and the way it creates form and makes the world three-dimensional.
We use charcoal to generate tonal pieces
Week 3 – Introduction to Colour Theory

Transforming the world from tone into colour to see light as colour. We begin simply using what we have learned about drawing and begin drawing with colour. The Munsel Colour system is used to give us all a common language with which to talk about colour. We will explore this with the subject of flowers and nature!
Soft chalk pastel allows the artist to capitalise on their drawing skills without dealing with wet media.
Week 4 – Wet Media “Now We Paint”

The brush has been the primary tool of the artist for centuries and this week we begin playing with paint – Watercolour is a great place to start.
Using watercolour as a colouring tool we create two pieces; line and wash, and tone and colour. Combining tone and colour helps create the illusion of depth and intrigue.
Using the built environment for inspiration we experiment with various techniques to create a record of our experience of place. This excersise touches on perspective and gives the student the tools to quickly sketch outdoors.
Week 5 – Experimenting with Mixed Media

Introducing acrylic paint we create a piece exploring the landscape and include drawing with pencil, chalk and pen. This introduction to mixed media expands the toolkit of the student and primes the individual to develop their personal creativity.
Week 6 – Style & The Next Level

Creativity comes from knowledge and play. Highly creative people have deep and diverse knowledge with which they can play like children.
This week we review the previous lessons and examine where we enjoy playing most. Confining our goal to producing a piece about our world.
With guidance and support students will push their artist style to The Next Level.
